The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will on Sunday, April 12, 2026, conduct a voter registration exercise within Nairobi’s Central Business District as part of its ongoing nationwide drive to enlist new voters.
The commission has urged eligible Kenyans to take advantage of the exercise by turning up with either a national identity card or a valid passport. The registration will run from 8 am to 5 pm.
IEBC said the CBD registration is aimed at increasing accessibility, especially for urban residents and workers who may not easily access constituency offices during weekdays.
The commission has also indicated that everyone is free to register during the exercise.
"You do not need to travel to your home county to register. The Commission has deployed open kits, which allow a citizen to register as a voter for any polling station in Kenya from the registration centre near you," said the commission.
The exercise comes against the backdrop of a broader continuous voter registration (CVR) programme that resumed earlier this year.
In January, the commission officially reopened voter registration across the country following a temporary suspension to allow for by-elections.
Under the CVR framework, Kenyans who have attained the age of 18 are eligible to register as voters, transfer their voting stations, or update their personal details in the voter register.
The process is free and forms a key pillar of the country’s electoral system.
The IEBC has since intensified efforts through an enhanced continuous voter registration (ECVR) drive launched in late March 2026, targeting millions of unregistered voters, particularly the youth.
Reports indicate that the exercise has already seen increased turnout in urban centres, with long queues witnessed in some areas as young people respond to mobilisation campaigns encouraging participation in the democratic process.
The commission has also been conducting stakeholder engagements, staff training and public awareness campaigns to improve efficiency, transparency and uptake of the registration process.
IEBC officials have consistently emphasised that continuous voter registration is critical in maintaining an accurate and credible voters’ roll ahead of the next general election, while ensuring no eligible Kenyan is locked out of the electoral process.
Sunday’s Nairobi CBD exercise is part of these ongoing efforts to bring services closer to the people and boost registration numbers in key population centres.
