Boxer Ferdinand Omondi, popularly known as Mbavu Destroyer, may have lost his highly anticipated bout against Portifas Odipo, alias Majembe, but he has emerged as a hero in his neighbourhood through an act of generosity.
Mbavu, who lost to Majembe on April 4 at KICC before a packed crowd in Kasarani, distributed packets of unga to his neighbours in Eastlands in a match that was billed as one of the most hyped boxing events in Kenya.
The bout ended in the fourth roundwhen Majembe landed a decisive body blow to Mbavu’s ribs. The referee stepped in and declared a technical knockout (TKO).
Mbavu was immediately escorted to the ringside medical team and later taken to hospital for observation. Though the injury was not life‑threatening, doctors recommended short‑term care before releasing him.
Majembe celebrated his victory with a prize package worth more than Sh 3.5 million, including cash, a championship belt, a sport bike, a car and a presidential bonus of Sh1 millionpledged by President William Ruto. Videos and photos of the knockout flooded social media platforms, showing Majembe’s power and the crowd’s excitement.
Without making speeches, Mbavu's actions spoke volumes. Residents gathered around him, grateful for the gesture at a time when food prices remain high. One neighbour described it as “a moment of solidarity,” noting that Mbavu had shown strength beyond the ring.
Videos of Mbavu’s generosity quickly circulated online. On X, fans praised him for humility in defeat, with some calling him “a champion of the people.” Others contrasted his quiet act of kindness with Majembe’s flashy celebrations, arguing that both fighters had made headlines in very different ways.
The online conversation highlighted how athletes can inspire not only through victory but also through compassion.
Though his professional record now reflects a loss, Mbavu Destroyer’s reputation outside the ring has grown stronger.
