Emmanuel Kiprono crosses the finishing line to win the men's 8km cross country race/ANGWENYI GICHANA

Emmanuel Kiprono and Vaneza Chebet completed a double on Thursday as athletics action intensified in the ongoing Brookside Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Games at Kisumu Senior School.

Kiprono, the World Cross Country U20 champion, claimed his second title after winning the men’s 5,000m race, having earlier triumphed in the junior men’s 8km event.

The Form Three student at Kimuron High School in Elgeyo Marakwet County clocked 13:31.4 to win the 5,000m. He finished ahead of Cornelius Kibichii, who placed second in 14:00.6, while Elkanah Kibet completed the podium in 14:15.5.

“The competition was not stiff because I lapped even the third-placed athlete. This is part of my preparations for the World U20 Championships in the United States. I’m happy with my progress in training,” said Kiprono. Kiprono also won silver in the men’s U20 race at the World Cross Country Championships in the US in January.

Chebet also secured a second victory, winning the women’s 3,000m after previously taking the women’s 6km cross-country title. She clocked 7:12.6 to beat Millicent Chepkonga, who finished second in 7:21.9, while Sheila Chepng’eno came third in 9:35.6.

“I’m happy with my second win here. It was tough, but I thank God for good health,” said Chebet. In the women’s 5,000m, Nancy Simiyu took top honours in 25:28.9."

Cecilia Njeri finished second in 26:07.6, while Esther Nabwire placed third in 26:58.2. Josephine Sembeyo won the women’s 1,500m in 4:14.2, followed by Sheila Chepng’eno in 4:19.0, with Scholastica Chemtai completing the podium in 4:26.4.

Emmaculate Awuor set a new javelin record with a throw of 41.05m. Bernadette Chesire finished second with 39.15m, while Caren Chepng’etich placed third with 38.89m. In the men’s 1,500m, Wilson Chepkwech won in 3:39.4, ahead of David Kipaiko (3:40.7), while Emmanuel Lemiso finished third in 3:44.3.
