Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron addresses journalists on the attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi in Kisumu /DOUGLAS OKIDDY

Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of individuals who sponsored and financed the assault on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, terming the incident a calculated act of political intimidation.

Oron urged security agencies not only to apprehend those captured on CCTV carrying out the assault, but also to pursue the “masterminds” behind it.

“Those who sponsored, financed and orchestrated this heinous act must be identified and brought to book. We cannot allow a culture where criminals are used as tools of political intimidation,” he said.

The MP described the attack as “shameful, cowardly and primitive”, warning that such incidents threaten democracy, the rule of law and the integrity of public service.

He called on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to act swiftly and impartially to ensure all those involved face the full force of the law.

Oron cautioned against the escalation of political competition into violence, emphasising that leadership contests must remain grounded in persuasion rather than aggression.

“Regardless of the circumstances, no individual deserves to be subjected to such unwanted aggression,” he said.

The legislator also moved to quell any potential ethnic tensions, stressing that the incident should not be misconstrued as a conflict between the Luo and Luhya communities.

“For decades, these communities have lived side by side in peace and mutual respect. This was a criminal act by a few individuals and must not be twisted into a narrative of ethnic hostility,” he said.

He warned that failure to act decisively could embolden lawlessness and destabilise Kisumu, which he described as a critical economic and political hub for the Western region.

“We must nip this in the bud. If we fail, we risk creating an environment where disorder thrives and our city becomes ungovernable,” Oron said.

Osotsi was assaulted in Kisumu on Wednesday in an incident that has sparked outrage among leaders, with growing calls for accountability and enhanced security for public officials.
