Shujaa co-captain George Ooro fends off a German opponent during the Sao Paulo sevens recently in Brazil/HANDOUTShujaa have embarked on a five-day residential training camp as they ramp up preparations for the Hong Kong Sevens in a fortnight.
The team will use the camp at the Moi Stadium, Kasarani, to firm up on their preparations and review videos of their opponents.
Co-captain Samuel Asati said game management, discipline and defence are among areas of focus.
“Despite our qualification, there are a couple of areas we will have to work on, especially game management, defence (with and without the ball) and sharpen up for what will be a tough tournament,” noted Asati.
Shujaa face, Australia, New Zealand and USA in the far East in the first of three tournaments that will determine core teams for the 2026/27 season.
Head coach Kevin Wambua expects a competitive challenge.
“The teams we’ll face in Hong Kong are among the best in the world and we, therefore, have to step up a notch higher and be willing to put in the hard yards in camp this week,” added Wambua.
“We know we have to step up in terms of our non-negotiables, and also individually and collectively, we need to step up. It’s not going to be easy, but we have the talent, we’ve done it before and I’m pretty sure we can do it again.”
The ultimate goal is to qualify for Division One next season. The team will be named on Friday, before they break camp for the weekend and depart for Hong Kong on Sunday.
Shujaa will open their campaign against Australia at 12:56 pm on April 17, face New Zealand at 3:47 pm and conclude their preliminary match against the USA at 8:24 am on April 18
The playoffs and finals are slated for Sunday. Shujaa will then head to Spain for the Vallodolid Sevens on May 29-31, with the final leg slated for Bordeaux on June 5-7.
