Police investigate two separate drowning incidents

Police in Nakuru and Vihiga counties are investigating two separate drowning incidents after unidentified male bodies were recovered from a lake and a river in the respective areas.

In Nakuru County, the body of an unidentified middle-aged man was found floating in Lake Elementaita in the Karura area, about 10 kilometres west of Kikopey Police Post in Gilgil Sub-County.

According to a police report, the incident was recorded on April 6, 2026, at about 6:40 p.m. after members of the public reported seeing the body in the lake.

Officers from Gilgil Police Station, Kikopey Police Post, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and crime scene investigators visited the scene and retrieved the body.

The body was taken to Gilgil Sub-County Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy. The deceased has not yet been identified, and investigations are ongoing.

In a separate incident in Sabatia Sub-County, Vihiga County, another unidentified male body was recovered from River Lidumbu within West Maragoli Location.

Police said the incident was reported on March 7, 2026, at about 7:54 p.m.

Officers from Kilingi Police Station and DCI scene-of-crime personnel visited the site and established that the body was an adult male aged about 45 years.

The report noted that the body had no visible physical injuries, except for bites around the mouth and right eye, believed to have been caused by crabs in the river.

The body was taken to Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Police in both counties confirmed that investigations into the incidents are ongoing, and they urged anyone with information about missing relatives to come forward to aid identification.
