Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has officially announced his retirement from professional football.
His announcement brings to an end a remarkable career that saw him rise from the streets of Muthurwa to compete on some of the world’s biggest stages.
Wanyama made the announcement in a heartfelt message on social media on Friday, saying he had lived his dream and thanking those who supported him throughout his journey.
“Today I announce my retirement from football; four different countries, six different clubs, a boy from Muthurwa with a big dream, carrying a nation’s pride every time I stepped onto the pitch,” he wrote.
The now‑34‑year‑old midfielder has been one of Kenya’s most successful football exports, with a career spanning nearly two decades across Europe and North America.
He became the first Kenyan player to feature in the English Premier League, signing with Southampton in 2013 after successful spells in Belgium and Scotland.
Wanyama’s time at Celtic was particularly memorable; he was part of the team that clinched back‑to‑back Scottish Premiership titles and earned a shock Champions League victory over Barcelona, scoring in the historic match that took the club into the knockout stages.
His Premier League journey continued with Tottenham Hotspur, where he became a fan favourite with his combative midfield play and leadership.
While at Spurs, he played in the UEFA Champions League final, helping the club reach one of the most prestigious club finals in Europe.
Later in 2020, Wanyama moved to CF Montréal in Canada’s Major League Soccer, where he continued to perform at a high level before a short stint with Dunfermline Athletic in Scotland.
Throughout his club career, he represented six different teams across four countries, showcasing his adaptability and commitment to the game.
On the international stage, Wanyama earned 64 caps for the Harambee Stars, scoring six goals and captaining the national side with distinction.
He represented Kenya at major tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations, and was revered by fans for his dedication and passion whenever he wore the national colours.
Messages have begun to pour in following Victor Wanyama’s retirement announcement.
Tottenham Hotspur took to their official social media platform to celebrate Victor Wanyama, praising his time at the club and wishing him all the best in retirement.
“We had Victor Wanyama, and he was fantastic. We enjoyed every moment. Wishing you all the very best in your retirement, Victor. Thank you for the memories," the Premier League club said.
Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura also praised the former Harambee Stars captain, saying: “Bravo, Victor, for being a true patriotic Kenyan.”
As Wanyama hangs up his boots, his legacy as a trailblazer for African footballers and a source of national pride will be remembered by supporters across Kenya and beyond.
Wanyama concluded by saying, "My career, thank you for walking this journey with me. I now take my next step into coaching, where I will be completing my UEFA A license this year."
