Police in Kirinyaga County are investigating an incident in which a county government official reported losing Sh1.5 million from a locked vehicle in Kutus town under unclear circumstances.
The incident occurred on April 1, 2026, and involved a director at the Kirinyaga County Government.
The official told police that he had withdrawn the cash from a local bank at around 3:00 pm. He then drove his Nissan double-cabin to a nearby hotel to have a meal.
Upon returning to his vehicle, he discovered that the money kept inside an envelope in the car was missing, despite the vehicle appearing to have remained locked.
Police visited the scene as part of ongoing investigations. Authorities have not yet established how the money was taken, and no arrests have been made so far.
Officers are reviewing security camera footage in the area and have also visited the bank where the cash was withdrawn. Investigations are ongoing.
Elsewhere, police in Embu are investigating a daytime robbery in Kamketha area, where a gang posing as delivery agents stole cash and valuables from a home.
The incident, reported on March 31, 2026, occurred at about 11:15 am when five men arrived at a private residence in a black Toyota Prado TX.
According to police, the suspects told the security guard at the gate that they had a parcel to deliver. The guard allowed one man into the compound, who was received by an elderly woman. She reportedly advised him to deliver the parcel to Embu town, where her son runs a wholesale business.
As the guard escorted the man back to the gate, the situation turned violent. The suspect grabbed the guard by the throat and signalled his accomplices, who were waiting in the vehicle, to force their way into the compound. Armed with machetes and knives, the gang entered the house and ordered all occupants to lie down.
They stole Sh450,000 in cash from the complainant’s bedroom, two gold necklace chains, and four hand bangles. The attackers also sprayed a choking substance inside the house before fleeing in the waiting vehicle. The complainant’s elderly mother sustained minor bruises on her legs and neck during the incident.
Police visited the scene and launched investigations. Authorities are pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the suspects.
