Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has added music to her political career with the release of a reggae love song titled Hit and Run.

The first-time legislator said she wrote the song years ago but shelved it while pursuing her law studies and later taking on other responsibilities.

“The song is officially out! So, what’s to say? I wrote this song so many years ago. Shelved it because of my law school duties and of course, the duties I took on later,” Maina said.

“This year, I reflected on a lot of things and went back to the studio. Within one hour, we were done with the recording and the video is officially out!”

Released on Thursday, the song had attracted more than 18,000 views on YouTube by Friday.

Written and performed by Maina, the song blends English and Kiswahili and explores relationships in which one partner enjoys the benefits of romance without being willing to make a commitment.

The song cautions lovers against partners who pursue relationships primarily for personal gain, encouraging them to identify warning signs early and walk away from relationships that offer affection without responsibility.

Two political figures from Kirinyaga, Senator Kamau Murango and Baragwi MCA Duncan Mathenge, also feature in the video.

The two political allies of Maina appear as male video vixens, taking on roles different from their usual political responsibilities.

Murango plays the role of a wealthy man, while Mathenge appears as a watchman.

In one scene, Maina rides a quad bike as a male admirer pursues her, apparently attempting to win her affection.

The chase brings the title Hit and Run to life, portraying romance as a pursuit in which one person may be more interested in what they can gain than in building a lasting relationship.

The song was produced with audio by Dr Eddie, while Danlee served as director and Afrikana Photo Studios handled the video.

Maina, who was elected in 2022 on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, is a lawyer and human rights advocate.

Born on January 3, 1994, in Kibingoti, Kirinyaga County, Maina attended Kiangoma Primary School and Kabare Girls High School before studying Mandarin at Kenyatta University.

She later earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi in 2016 and a postgraduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law in 2017.

Before entering politics, she headed litigation at Mathenge Wambogu & Advocates and later became Managing Partner at Njeri Maina Law Advocates.
