Safaricom unveils AI-powered My OneApp, merging M-PESA and MySafaricom under one roof/HANDOUT

Safaricom has unveiled My OneApp, a redesigned AI-powered platform that merges M-PESA and the MySafaricom App into a single intelligent ecosystem, marking a major step in its transition to what it calls FinTech 2.0.

The new app, currently available on Android devices only, was introduced during day two of the Decode summit in Nairobi, where executives positioned it as more than a simple product consolidation.

Instead, they described it as the foundation of an AI-first, personalised digital infrastructure.

“For the first time, customers can see their M-PESA balance, GSM balance, bills, bundles and financial services in one place,” said Safaricom Chief Financial Services Officer Esther Waititu.

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said the launch reflects the company’s broader evolution beyond telecommunications.

“We are no longer just a telco. We are becoming a technology company building the intelligent digital infrastructure that will power Kenya’s future,” he said.

The convergence brings together the standalone M-PESA App and the MySafaricom App into a unified Super App serving over 6.5 million 30-day active users and hosting more than 80 mini-applications within its ecosystem.

From convergence to intelligence

Beyond integration, Safaricom says My OneApp is designed to learn user behaviour over time.

Using AI-driven personalisation, the platform adapts based on transaction frequency, preferred contacts, recurring payments and commonly used services.

Frequently accessed features such as investments, lending, or bill payments automatically surface on the home screen.

“The more you use the app, the more it learns you,” Waititu said.

“It’s not just convergence, it’s personal.”

Users can customise quick actions, automate bill payments, edit favourite services and access tailored bundles from a single dashboard.

The app also integrates biometric authentication, fraud reporting, PIN recovery and network diagnostics without requiring USSD or contact centre support.

A financial hub built on FinTech

My OneApp embeds Safaricom’s expanding financial services suite directly into the customer journey.

Users can:

Invest in money market funds through Ziidi

Trade shares via CD Trader

Access Fuliza credit

Separate business income using Pochi la Biashara

Purchase device and income-protection insurance products

Behind the interface is a major infrastructure overhaul. Safaricom says its upgraded architecture now supports up to 6,000 transactions per second, up from roughly 100 transactions per second in earlier years.

The company transitioned its financial core to a multi-tenant, AI-first platform under FinTech 2.0, enabling scale, resilience and intelligent service delivery.

Building a digital operating system

Safaricom frames My OneApp as more than a payments tool.

Entertainment services such as Baze, gaming, news access and third-party mini-app integrations sit alongside financial services, positioning the platform as what executives describe as a “digital lifestyle ecosystem.”

With more than 66,000 integrations through the Daraja API platform, Waititu says the Super App strengthens the bridge between developers, businesses and consumers.

Ndegwa said the future of Kenya’s digital economy will depend on builders leveraging Safaricom’s platforms.

“Our role is to provide the rails. What developers build on top of them will define the next phase of growth.”

“Our role is to bring businesses and consumers together so that we can solve problems and enable a fantastic lifestyle,” Waititu said.

From inclusion to prosperity

Kenya’s financial inclusion rate has grown from 23 per cent at the launch of M-PESA nearly two decades ago to 84 per cent today.

With access largely achieved, Safaricom says its focus is shifting toward financial health, wealth creation and resilience.

“As we open smarter and more inclusive rails, we’re not just moving money, we’re transforming lives,” Waititu said.

With My OneApp now live on Android, Safaricom is betting that Kenya’s next digital chapter will be defined not just by connectivity, but by intelligent, AI-driven financial ecosystems built on unified infrastructure.
