Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed County Commissioners across the country to support the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in the ongoing Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise.
Speaking in Kapyego, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Murkomen said the administrators will work closely with chiefs and security agencies to ensure that the nationwide exercise runs smoothly and reaches all eligible Kenyans.
“We have issued a directive to county commissioners, chiefs and security teams to facilitate IEBC in its work,” Murkomen said.
“They must make sure that Kenyans get the opportunity to register as voters in all parts of the country.”
The Cabinet Secretary emphasised the importance of the exercise in strengthening democratic participation ahead of the 2027 General Election, urging citizens, particularly young people, to take advantage of the registration window.
“We want the youth to have ample opportunity to register,” he said. “Also, we are asking the youth to make sure that, come 2027, they elect good leadership. We believe the youth want to elect leaders who have a vision for Kenya, and we have confidence in them.”
The Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration exercise officially kicked off on March 30 and will run for 30 days until April 28, 2026.
According to the IEBC, the nationwide drive is aimed at expanding access to voter registration services and updating the country’s electoral register in preparation for the next general election cycle.
In a statement, the Commission said the exercise will be conducted across all County Assembly Wards on a rotational basis, guided by kit movement schedules.
In addition to the mobile registration units, fixed registration points have been set up at constituency offices, Huduma Centres, universities and colleges, as well as the IEBC Customer Experience Centre at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi.
Registration services will be available daily, including weekends, to maximise accessibility.
Eligible applicants are required to present a valid national identity card or Kenyan passport to be registered. The exercise also provides an opportunity for already registered voters to transfer their voting locations or update their personal details at designated IEBC offices.
However, the Commission has excluded certain areas currently affected by by-elections and ongoing election petitions.
These include Porro and Endo wards, Emurua Dikirr Constituency, as well as Malava and Mbeere North constituencies. IEBC said the exclusion is necessary to avoid interference with ongoing electoral processes in those regions.
In a gazette notice dated March 27, the electoral body clarified that the exercise is open to all Kenyan citizens aged 18 years and above who possess the required identification documents.
Voters seeking to transfer their registration will be required to present themselves at IEBC offices in their preferred electoral areas, while those wishing to update their details must visit the offices where they are currently registered.
At the conclusion of the 30-day exercise, the Commission said continuous voter registration services will revert to constituency offices nationwide.
