The National Police Service (NPS) has appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information that could aid investigations into the tragic road accident along the Nyeri–Nyahururu road that left 15 people dead.

In a statement, police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga urged witnesses or anyone with relevant details to report to the nearest police station or use designated emergency communication channels.

“Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is encouraged to contact the nearest police station or reach us through our emergency numbers,” Nyaga said.

He outlined several reporting channels available to the public, including the emergency numbers 999 and 911, the #FichuaKwaDCI toll-free line 0800 722 203, and a WhatsApp hotline 0709 570 000.

“Additionally, we call upon all stakeholders, including the general public, to cooperate with all enforcement agencies as we work to enhance road safety and bring an end to these preventable tragedies,” he added.

Nyaga noted that the NPS is working closely with other government agencies in a coordinated effort to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash, which has shocked the nation and reignited concerns over road safety.

“The National Police Service, in collaboration with other agencies, has launched a thorough investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding this unfortunate incident,” he said.

At the same time, the police reminded motorists, pedestrians, and all road users of their responsibility to observe traffic rules and exercise caution at all times.

“Meanwhile, we remind all motorists, pedestrians and other road users of their fundamental duty and personal responsibility to exercise due care, caution and good judgment while using the roads,” Nyaga said.

He added that traffic police officers, working alongside other enforcement bodies, will intensify operations to ensure strict adherence to the Highway Code, with the aim of improving safety and preventing further loss of life.

“The National Police Service remains steadfast in the enforcement of traffic laws to ensure safety, order and efficiency on our roads,” he said, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to protecting road users.

The NPS assured the public that updates on the investigation will be provided as more information becomes available.

The latest developments come after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) released preliminary findings pointing to human error as a key factor in the crash.

NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa said early investigations suggest that reckless driving, excessive speeding, and the operation of an unroadworthy lorry may have contributed to the accident.

“I want to be unequivocal: If these suspicions are confirmed, this was a preventable catastrophe,” Kondiwa said.

He noted that investigators are working to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the crash, including assessing whether traffic regulations were violated and whether the vehicles involved met required safety standards.

“We will scrutinise the roadworthiness of the commercial vehicles involved, the conduct of the drivers, and the adherence to traffic regulations,” he said.

As part of its response, the NTSA has dispatched a team of experts to the scene to conduct a forensic reconstruction of the accident.
