The Legio Maria has called on Christians and all Kenyans to use the occasion of Palm Sunday to promote peace, justice, and national unity amid rising political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a message released on Sunday, Rt. Rev. Bishop Wycliffe Nyapera urged the faithful to reflect deeply on the meaning of the Holy Week, noting that the country is currently grappling with uncertainty, division, and social strain.
“The Holy Week calls us to be agents of peace, to stand for justice and to extend compassion to all, especially the most vulnerable in our communities,” Nyapera said.
He observed that the current environment, characterised by hatred, blackmail, and growing divisions, demands introspection and moral renewal among citizens and leaders alike.
According to the bishop, the spiritual significance of the period should inspire Kenyans to rise above differences and embrace unity.
“I urge all faithful to observe this Holy Week as a sacred time set aside for silence, listening, liturgical participation, conversion, introspection, prayer, and reflection,” he added.
Nyapera’s message comes at a time when political temperatures in the country are steadily rising as leaders begin early campaigns and realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In recent weeks, political exchanges have intensified, marked by sharp criticism, frequent rallies, and increasingly combative rhetoric.
Observers have raised concerns that the tone of political engagement is becoming more confrontational, with insults, threats, and personal attacks being used as mobilisation tools. Analysts warn that such trends risk deepening divisions in an already polarized society if left unchecked.
Religious leaders and civil society groups have also expressed alarm over the situation, cautioning that sustained verbal confrontations among political actors could inflame tensions at the grassroots level and undermine national cohesion.
Against this backdrop, Nyapera called on leaders to use the Holy Week as an opportunity to inspire hope and unity rather than engage in divisive politics.
“It is not a time for distraction, leisure excursions, or political rhetoric, but a season for spiritual renewal,” he said.
Palm Sunday, which commemorates the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, marks the beginning of Holy Week and sets the tone for reflection leading up to Easter Sunday.
Nyapera emphasized that the message of the day goes beyond celebration, challenging Christians to remain steadfast in faith even during difficult times.
“Do we remain with Him when following Him becomes difficult, bumpy and full of trials? Palm Sunday gently invites us to a deeper commitment, to walk with Jesus not only in His triumph, but also in His Passion,” he said.
He urged Kenyans to embrace humility, compassion, and responsibility during the sacred period, noting that lasting peace and justice can only be achieved when individuals commit to personal transformation.
