
Tragedy struck in Huruma estate, Nairobi, after a mother and her four-month-old baby died in a midnight fire. Detectives are investigating the incident in which two people, a mother and her infant daughter, were killed in the blaze.
According to police, the fire broke out on Thursday at around 1:32 a.m. in the Ngei 2 area. Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire engulfed a one-bedroom house on the fifth floor of a five-storey building, police said.
Efforts to contain the inferno involved a fire engine, with members of the public also assisting in rescue attempts. However, a 40-year-old woman and her infant daughter were burnt beyond recognition.
Nairobi police commander Issa Mohamud said property of unknown value was destroyed in the fire, which is suspected to have been caused by a gas explosion.
The bodies were taken to Nairobi City Mortuary for preservation and postmortem examination.
The incident has raised concerns over fire safety in densely populated residential estates in Nairobi, particularly in relation to the handling and storage of cooking gas in multi-storey buildings. Investigations into the exact cause of the fire are ongoing.
In a separate incident in Kasarani, Nairobi, police have launched investigations after the body of an unidentified person was found lying along a roadside on Wednesday evening.
The incident was reported at around 7:55 p.m. on Wednesday by members of the public who were walking along the Ngomongo–Mwiki Road near the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) offices within the Kasarani Stadium area.
The witnesses alerted officers at Kasarani Stadium Police Station after spotting what appeared to be a lifeless body. The body, which had already begun decomposing and was covered in houseflies, was found lying on the ground with no visible physical injuries.
A search at the scene did not yield any identification documents, leaving the deceased’s identity unknown. The body was moved to Nairobi Funeral Home, where it awaits identification and a postmortem examination to determine the cause of death. Authorities have appealed to members of the public with missing relatives to visit the facility to assist in identification. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.
In Kitui Town, the body of a man was found on a verandah following a suspected sudden death. The man had no identification documents when the body was discovered on Wednesday, police said. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.
In Kendu Bay, Homa Bay County, the body of a man was found drowned in Lake Victoria. The body is believed to have been swept to the banks of the lake where it was discovered on Wednesday. Police said the body was decomposing when it was found and was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.
In Mandera’s Ashabito area, a driver of a van transporting miraa drowned in floods. The victim, identified as Edo Hassan Amin, drowned together with his vehicle while navigating a flooded river. Locals retrieved his body on March 25 and buried it at a local cemetery before informing the police.
Police say flood-related deaths have risen to 90 in recent weeks.
