Four police officers have been arrested in connection with a violent robbery involving Sh4.2 million in Nairobi’s Utawala area.

One of the officers had, together with his colleagues, been arrested on Tuesday over a separate attempted robbery in Kitengela Town, Kajiado County.

In the Kitengela incident, the four were taken to court, where a magistrate granted each a cash bail of Sh50,000 after declining a prosecution request to detain them for 10 days to complete investigations.

They were ordered to report daily to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) office in Isinya.

The latest arrest, which took place in Embakasi, was the second in two days.

Police said the suspects were apprehended on Thursday and detained at Embakasi Police Station pending arraignment on Friday.

The officers are linked to a robbery with violence case reported on March 18, 2026.

A complainant, a businessman and proprietor of a supermarket in Utawala, told investigators he had withdrawn Sh4.2 million from a bank branch in Utawala on March 17, 2026.

The money was intended for a business transaction with an agency in Syokimau.

While driving along Mombasa Road, the complainant said he was intercepted near Gateway Mall by four men dressed in police uniforms and reflective jackets.

Two of the suspects were reportedly armed with pistols.

Police said the group, believed to have been trailing him from the bank using a red Mazda CX-5, accused him of trafficking narcotics, handcuffed him, and forced him into their vehicle.

They allegedly stole the cash and later abandoned him in the Karen area of Nairobi, police said.

The complainant reported the matter at Karen Police Station before the case was transferred to the DCI in Embakasi.

Police said the four officers were positively identified during an identification parade conducted at Isinya Police Station on Thursday.

They are expected to be arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts on Friday, March 27, 2026. Investigations are ongoing.

In the Kitengela incident, police said a civilian mentioned in the case escaped and is being sought.

The civilian is alleged to have lured a foreign national and assaulted him before the plan was disrupted.

Police said the officers were part of a group that allegedly attempted to steal a diamond necklace from a Congolese man.

The victim said he was lured from Namanga to Kitengela to sell the chain to a potential buyer.

On arrival, he said he was attacked and handcuffed, prompting him to scream and attract a crowd.

Police said members of the public took the suspects to a local police station, where it was established they were serving police officers.

The victim said he lost the necklace, which he valued at USD1,905, as well as USD3,000 and 300 Euros during the incident.

Police said the officers are under investigation and described the incident as isolated, adding that they will face charges of robbery with violence.

Police spokesman Michael Muchiri said that, as in any society, there may be rogue officers.

He said mechanisms are in place to handle such cases and encouraged the public to report complaints against police officers when affected.
