Jacob Krop at a previous race/ HANDOUT

Jacob Krop has wasted no time resetting his ambitions, shifting focus to the 2026 Diamond League circuit after narrowly missing the podium at the World Athletics Indoor Championships.

At the season’s first global showdown in Poland, the 2022 world 5,000m silver medallist was part of an eight-athlete Kenyan contingent competing indoors. Lining up in the 3,000m, Krop delivered a determined performance but fell just short of a medal, finishing fourth in 7:36.76.

Britain’s Josh Kerr claimed gold in 7:35.56, with American Cole Hocker taking silver (7:35.70), while France’s Yann Schrub edged bronze in 7:35.71.

Following that near miss, Krop has quickly turned his attention to the Diamond League, which begins on May 8 in Doha. “Now my focus is on the Diamond League. I am hoping I can run well. I expect great results,” Krop said.

The 24-year-old heads into the new campaign with unfinished business after a difficult 2025 season. He opened his Diamond League run in Oslo, finishing 11th in the 5,000m (12:51.16) in a race won by American Nico Young.

Subsequent outings in Paris (12th in 13:05.04) and Lausanne (14th in 13:18.65) highlighted his struggles, though he showed signs of recovery in Monaco, finishing inside the top 10 in 13:04.81 in a race won by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha. Krop later revealed that his campaign was hampered by injury, which disrupted his rhythm throughout the season.

He now views his World Indoors performance as a sign of resurgence. “Last year, I was dealing with an injury, and I hope for great results this year,” he said. “I thank God I finished fourth. The medal places escaped me, but I am happy with the performance.”

Despite missing out on the podium in Poland, Krop’s pedigree on the global stage remains clear. He is a Commonwealth Games 5,000m bronze medallist and a former African U20 silver medallist over the distance.

He announced himself on the world stage with silver at the World Athletics Championships (13:09.98) before adding bronze at the World Athletics Championships (13:12.28). With his fitness returning and confidence rebuilding, Krop now heads into the Diamond League season aiming to convert promise into podium finishes.
