Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has reportedly been rushed to Karen Hospital after his condition worsened while in custody.

Tuju had been held at Karen Police Station, where his family and legal representatives pushed for immediate medical attention.

The former Jubilee Party Secretary‑General was arrested on March 23 after resurfacing, following a disappearance that began on Saturday evening.

Tuju had gone missing alongside his aide, Steve Mwanga, prompting a missing person report to be filed at Karen Police Station.

His motor vehicle was later found abandoned along Miotoni Lane, with its hazard lights still on, and efforts to reach him were unsuccessful as his mobile phone remained switched off.

Tuju’s arrest, captured by media and bystanders, was swift and intensely physical. He had just addressed the media upon resurfacing, shedding light on why he had not reported to the police earlier.

According to Tuju, individuals he believed to be police officers had previously visited his residence in unmarked vehicles, raising concerns about their identity and intentions.

“Police have been to my residence without number plates on their vehicles. How do you go to report to them?” Tuju asked.

Police later explained the reason behind Tuju’s arrest. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stated that investigations had established that the reported disappearance was staged.

Speaking to the media on Monday, DCI Director Amin Mohamed said, “We acted after establishing that the claims of Tuju’s disappearance were not genuine. The provision of false information is a serious offence and poses a risk to national security.”

The matter escalated after Tuju’s family denied police access to his residence, prompting the National Police Service to deploy a combined team of experienced detectives to handle the case.
