- Severe itching

Her condition reportedly worsened rapidly, prompting multiple hospital visits as doctors worked to determine the cause of the reaction.

Diagnosis: Stevens–Johnson Syndrome
Medical examinations later confirmed that the reaction had progressed into Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a rare but serious condition often triggered by medications.
Stevens–Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is classified as a medical emergency. It affects the skin and mucous membranes, leading to symptoms such as:
- Painful rashes and blistering
- Skin peeling
- Fever and systemic complications
Medical research indicates that the condition is most commonly caused by adverse drug reactions, particularly from medications such as antibiotics, antiretrovirals, and some antimalarials.
Link to Medication Components
Doctors attributed Khalifa’s reaction to sulphites present in the medication. Sulphite sensitivity can, in rare cases, trigger severe allergic responses, including complications that escalate into SJS.
Studies show that over 90% of Stevens–Johnson Syndrome cases are linked to drug exposure, with symptoms typically appearing within days to weeks after starting a new medication.
Hospitalisation and Recovery
Khalifa revealed that she was admitted to the hospital for several days as doctors managed her condition. During that period, she described fearing for her life due to the severity of the symptoms.
Treatment for SJS generally involves:
- Immediate discontinuation of the suspected drug
- Supportive care, often in specialised units
- Close monitoring to prevent complications
