Barely two months after a plot to topple KRU chairman Sasha Mutai was botched, sitting board members have hatched a vote of no confidence during an upcoming Special General Meeting (SGM) set for 30, May 2025.

The well calculated move has seen underground efforts ongoing to bring down Mutai, whose tenure since 2023 has been marred by wrangles.

This comes after a failed attempt to oust Mutai was blocked by the Sports Disputes Tribunal III (SDT), declared his suspension “illegal, null and void.”

The SDT on March 23, 2025, ruled that procedural violations, unauthorized convening of meetings, and concluded that only the Chairman, or the Vice-Chairman, can call board meetings.

The tribunal also condemned the notice issued by the Honorary Secretary, calling it unconstitutional and unjust.

Despite Sasha managing to get major sponsorship deals, including SportPesa, Tusker, Safaricom, and Crown Paints, he has been met by resistance and relentless boardroom battles that culminated to the coup.

However, rugby players have been doing relatively good on and off the pitch, with sponsorships supporting various aspects of the sport. Player allowances, medical insurance, and prize money for the Kenya Cup playoffs are catered for.

The internal wrangles have increasingly overshadowed any gains in the Rugby fraternity, turning the cracks into a rift, that seems irreversible.

A former KRU director, is believed to be the mastermind in collaboration with sitting board members, in the push to remove Mutai.

While the motives remain unclear, deals gone sour and un accountability are whispered to be the reasons behind the fights.

The power struggle comes despite the national teams as well as local competitions doing well. Kenya Lionesses and Shujaa Secured a slot in the 2026 HSBC Division 2, after winning the Los Angeles playoffs.

The two sides overcame Canada and South Africa respectively to secure their slots in the new-look second-tier.

Mutai did not comment on the developments but previously said

“The boards actions are motivated by greed, not by the development of rugby. What they are doing is not good for Rugby. I will continue to work for rugby as long as I am chairman,” Mutai declared during an interview with Radio Jambo.
