Vincent Mutai during last year's Cardiff Half Marathon

Vincent Mutai is set to spearhead a powerful Kenyan line-up as he looks to defend his Cardiff Half Marathon title on October 6 in the streets of Britain.

The 28-year-old will return to the event, where he led an all-Kenyan top-seven sweep in a time of 1:00:34.

Shadrack Kimining (1:00:47) and Bernard Biwott (1:00:50) completed the podium with Geoffrey Koech (1:01:42), Wesley Kimutai (1:02:59), David Kimaiyo (1:03:20) and Martin Musyoka (1:04:05) following in that order. 

His credentials include a runners-up finish in the Night of 10,000m (27:31.31) in London last year behind USA’s Paul Chelimo (27:12.73).

He placed seventh at the Castellon 10km road race in February last year, clocking 27:34 and featured at the Istanbul Half Marathon in April, finishing 19th in 1:02:24. He participated at the Yangzhou Half Marathon in March, clocking 1:01:00 hrs for fifth place.

In the same month, he competed at the Kenya Cross Country Championships held at the Prison Staff Training College in Ruiru,  finishing 27th in 29:56.

Joining Mutai in the Cardiff showdown will be 2019 Istanbul Half Marathon champion Bernard Ngeno and 2023 Milano Half Marathon winner Cosmas Boi.

Ngeno holds a personal best of 59:07 over the half marathon set in Valencia 2019, where he placed second behind Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha.

His resume consists of runner-up finishes at the 2019 Copenhagen Half Marathon (59:16), the 2020 Houston Half Marathon (59:26) and the Port Gentil 10km Road Race (27:44).

Boi’s Half Marathon personal best is 59:29 set during last year’s Buenos Aires race,  where he trailed Roncer Konga (59:08).

His credentials include a runners-up finish at the Buenos Aires Half Marathon on August 25 (1:00:25), a third-place finish at last year’s Ibiza 10km road race (27:29) and a second-place finish at the Nittaidai challenge games in the 10,000m last year (27:27.88).

Kenya’s main competition will be the 2017 English national cross-country champion, Ben Connor.

Connor’s Half Marathon personal best stands at 1:00:55 set at the Antrim Coast race in 2020,  where he placed third.

In the women's field, 2024 Lille 10km champion Grace Loibach will headline the list.

Loibach is fresh from a fourth-place finish at the tRUNsylvania 10km road race on September 22 where she clocked 30:33.

This year, Her other credentials include victory from the Boilermaker 15km road race in June (49:18) and a ninth place finish from the Seashore group Doha meeting in May,  where she clocked 15:01.10 in the 5,000m.
