Machakos Golf Club will serve as the training venue for teams featuring in the Safari Sevens slated for October 11-13.
Machakos Gender, Sports, Youth and Social Welfare County Executive Committee (CEC) member, John Kilonzo, said the 16 men’s and 10 women’s teams will train at regular intervals at the venue between Wednesday and Friday next week as they embark on the final preparations for the three-day rugby extravaganza.
“The Machakos Golf Club will be ready to host all the teams. We have made arrangements with the club to ensure the grounds are in good condition and spruced up for the international teams.
Kilonzo observed they were exploring ways to set up another venue at Konza.
“We are looking at Konza as the alternative venue and by the end of the week, I believe we will be in a better position to make a decision,” he said.
Kilonzo, who serves as a director at the KRU, said the county government is putting the final touches to the Kenyatta Stadium with the renovation to the playing surface, changing rooms and other logistics.
“Work on the ground started last week and it is ongoing. We expect Kenyatta Stadium to be ready for use by Wednesday next week,” he said.
Machakos hosted the Africa Cup Women’s Sevens Championship in 2014 and the popular Masaku Sevens same year.
This is the first time Africa’s Premier Sevens tournament is being hosted away from the capital.
During a courtesy call to Machakos County Governor Wavinya Ndeti by the KRU officials, Ndeti expressed her excitement about Machakos hosting the tournament, highlighting the county’s readiness for the historic event.
“We are honoured to host the Safari Sevens for the first time outside Nairobi, and Machakos is ready to deliver a world-class experience. Our county is not only prepared to showcase thrilling rugby but also our renowned warmth, hospitality, and vibrant culture,” said Ndeti.
She added: “Safari Sevens is not just a rugby tournament; it’s a celebration of sportsmanship and excellence. Let’s bring the energy, cheer loudly and make this an unforgettable experience,” she said.
KRU vice chairman Moses Ndale said they are keen to develop the game across the country.
“The decision to bring the Safari Sevens to Machakos aligns with our mission to spread the game to regions beyond Nairobi. This is not just about rugby; it’s about community engagement, fostering local talent and creating economic opportunities for the people of Machakos. We believe this event will leave a lasting legacy.”
