Kenyan photojournalist Allans Ademba has emerged at the centre of a growing youth-led civic movement encouraging voter registration ahead of the 2027 General Election. Through the hashtag #TukoKadi, Ademba has been encouraging Kenyans—especially Gen Z—to fulfill their civic duty by registering to vote.

Citizen-Led Initiative Gains Momentum

The #TukoKadi campaign is a citizen-driven initiative that has largely been mobilised online before transitioning into physical action on the ground.

According to reports, Ademba spearheaded a mass registration drive in Kasarani, Nairobi, where hundreds of young people turned up to register at Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) centres.

The exercise recorded significant success, with at least 641 new voters registered in a single day, highlighting a renewed interest in political participation among young Kenyans.

From Online Trend to Real-World Action

The campaign draws inspiration from viral social media trends, where young people document civic activities and encourage peers to follow suit.

Ademba leveraged this digital energy by organizing groups, including WhatsApp mobilization channels, to physically show up at registration centers.
“They said Gen Z are not registering… but we’ve shown them that we are,” Ademba said during the drive.
Participants were encouraged to record short videos after registering to inspire more youths and further amplify the campaign message online.

Historically, youth voter turnout has been relatively low, but movements like #TukoKadi are seeking to reverse that trend.

Support for the campaign has also come from activists and public figures, with many calling for similar drives to be replicated across the country.

A Growing Movement

As the campaign continues to gain traction, #TukoKadi is positioning itself as more than just a hashtag—it is becoming a symbol of youth-driven political awareness and responsibility.

With increasing numbers of young Kenyans embracing voter registration, Ademba’s call is clear: civic engagement begins with getting registered, and the power to shape the country’s future lies in participation
