The world of Bongo Flava is in mourning following the death of the man credited with giving Tanzania’s biggest stars their international voice. Allen Sadiki Ngonyani, known to many as "Teacher Allen," passed away on Sunday, 15 March 2026.
According to Tanzanian sources, he died at Geza Hospital in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, after a short battle with complications from high blood pressure. He was 43 years old.
Despite his massive influence on the global success of Tanzanian music, his final send-off was a quiet affair.

The Mentor to Bongo’s Bigshots
Diamond Platnumz, the CEO of Wasafi Classic Baby (WCB), was perhaps his most famous student. Diamond sought out Allen's services as his career began to move beyond East African borders.
The two were introduced by Diamond's former partner, Penny, shortly after his break-up with Wema Sepetu.
Diamond was so impressed that he asked Allen to train his entire roster. This included stars such as Harmonize and Rayvanny. Under Allen’s tutelage, these artists moved from basic phrases to speaking fluent English in public forums.
"Diamond Platnumz told me he wanted to be taught English, especially American English. He confessed that he knew nothing,” Teacher Allen said in a past interview.
A Solemn and Private End
Teacher Allen’s final days were spent in the care of his family. His nephew, Iddi Salum, revealed to one of Tanzania’s media outlets that the teacher had fallen ill three days before his passing. Doctors at Geza Hospital confirmed that his heart had become increasingly fragile.
"Uncle did not have a wife or children, so it was just the family supporting him in his final days." — Iddi Salum.

The burial took place at Ungindoni Cemetery in Kigamboni. In accordance with Islamic traditions, his body was wrapped in a white cloth and lowered into a grave.
While the ceremony was attended by family, friends, and some former students, the famous "bigshots" he mentored were notably absent from the graveside.

Breaking the Language Barrier
Tanzania is a nation deeply rooted in Swahili. While the language is a source of national pride, many artists have historically struggled to break into the international market due to the English language barrier.
Teacher Allen became the bridge between local talent and global audiences. He did not just teach grammar; he provided the confidence needed for artists to conduct interviews and perform on world stages.
Legacy of a Teacher
Allen Ngonyani leaves behind a legacy that lives on through the lyrics and interviews of his students. He is remembered not just as a linguist, but as a consultant who helped shape the professional image of Bongo Flava.
