Lydia Wanjiru, the entrepreneur and content creator, has sparked a fresh conversation online about the shifting priorities of modern women.

Through a series of candid Instagram stories, she revealed a preference that challenges traditional societal norms: choosing single motherhood over the prospect of marriage.

Wanjiru’s reflections were triggered by a viral comment section where women in their 40s shared the joys of being single. One user, Queen Njeri, described her lifestyle as having "dodged magazines of bullets," citing the freedom to travel or choose not to cook for a week.

These testimonials catalyzed Wanjiru to share her own path.

For Wanjiru, the decision is a matter of practical responsibility. She argued that managing the needs of a child alone is a far more appealing prospect than managing an adult partner who fails to contribute to the household.

"I think it's actually much better to deal with a child as a single mum than deal with a whole adult who you call a husband who is not taking up the responsibilities," she told her followers.

She clarified that if forced to choose between being marriage-free or child-free, she would readily drop the "marriage-free" tag to have a child, but would still avoid the altar.

The professional cost of love

Beyond domestic dynamics, Wanjiru highlighted how romantic commitment often hinders her professional ambitions. Describing herself as a "lover girl," she admitted that she tends to give an excessive amount of time and energy to her partners.

In the past, this emotional investment led her to neglect her business and content creation. To protect her growth, she has declared that she is not dating this year.

She intends to use this time to "create, build, and innovate" without the distractions of a committed relationship.

Validation and simple freedoms

The influencer admitted that while she is human and occasionally questions her choices, seeing older women uphold similar decisions provides essential validation. She noted that she feels "not crazy" for wanting a life where she does not have to answer to anyone.

"I can wake up and choose to eat ugali in the morning... I can wake up and decide to date whoever I want... because there's no one depending on me," she explained.

A pragmatic approach to dating

When she does decide to re-enter the dating scene, Wanjiru’s standards remain strictly pragmatic. She expressed a firm stance against "50/50" financial arrangements and stated that she views dating as an exchange.

"I cannot date you if you don't have money," she said, explaining that she expects a tangible return for the parts of herself she gives to a relationship. Her priorities remain focused on health safety, financial stability, and a life free from unnecessary drama.
