The quiet village of Gitei in central Kenya recently witnessed a poignant moment of remembrance. Esther Njeri, the grandmother of the late TikTok star Brian Chira, was seen meticulously cleaning her grandson's grave.
This act of love comes exactly two years after the young creator’s life was cut short in a tragic accident.
In the video, Njeri moves with a slow, deliberate grace as she brushes away dust and debris from the headstone. The scene is a stark contrast to the chaos that defined Chira’s final send-off in March 2024.
She uses a soft cloth to wipe the surface, ensuring the site where her "grandson" rests remains dignified.

The Song of a Lost Favourite
As she works, a familiar melody plays in the background. It is the song "One Call" by singer Otile Brown. This was known to be Chira's favourite tune before his passing.
The lyrics, "nipigie simu yangu one call," drift through the air as Njeri tends to the flowers and the earth.

“Rest easy, my son,” she captioned the video.
The music serves as a bridge between the living and the dead. It reminds viewers of the vibrant, 23-year-old man who once commanded the attention of hundreds of thousands online.
A Legacy of Fame and Struggle
Brian Chira was not just another social media user. He was a digital phenomenon who amassed over 400,000 followers in just one year.
His rise to fame began in December 2022 when a viral TV interview showcased his wit and eloquence.
However, his life was marked by deep personal pain. Chira was orphaned at age eight and raised by his grandmother, Njeri. He later revealed he was living with HIV, a struggle that contributed to bouts of depression and alcohol abuse.
From Chaos to Calm
The peace seen in the recent video is a far cry from the day Chira was buried. At the time, what was meant to be a small service for 500 people was "deluged" by more than 5,000 fans.
Many of these attendees were unruly, drinking alcohol and taking selfies atop graves, which shocked the local Kikuyu community.
Some mourners even watered the funeral flowers with alcohol. The family was largely denied the chance to mourn in peace. Today, the "Chira Clan" has mostly moved on, leaving Njeri alone to maintain the site in the sleepy village.

Final Remembrance
Chira died on the night of 16 March 2024, after being hit by a lorry that sped away in Kiambu County. Two years on, the driver remains at large.
For Esther Njeri, the justice she seeks may be distant, but her care for Chira remains constant. She continues to honour the boy she raised from childhood, one wipe of the gravestone at a time.
