The Sh87 billion Expressway was launched by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022. The Expressway decongests Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way.

The road has 11 tolling stations, 54 toll plazas, and 54 cameras along the 27 km expressway, with 126 cameras inside the toll plazas.

The Nairobi Expressway is a 27KM toll road from Mlolongo to the James Gichuru junction. It is managed and operated by Moja Expressway under a public-private partnership.

The dual carriageway has 11 interchanges at Mlolongo, Standard Gauge Railway, JKIA, Eastern Bypass, Southern Bypass, Capital Centre, Haile Selassie Avenue, Museum Hill, Westlands, and James Gichuru Road.

The expressway, with 18.2km on the ground and 8.9km elevated, is a class A, four-lane dual carriageway with a design speed of 80km per hour.

Moja Expressway Company Limited's vision is to transform public transport through intelligent and connected expressway systems as it seeks to modernise road infrastructure in the region.

The company said it aims to become a leading service provider of intelligent expressway transportation while offering integrated solutions for expressway operations and maintenance.

According to the operator, the goal is to support a more efficient and technology-driven road network that enhances mobility for motorists and commuters.

Moja Expressway said its mission is centred on comfort, convenience, and connectivity with a focus on delivering modern expressway services that prioritise safety, efficiency, and innovation.

The company noted that it remains committed to innovation, financing, development, construction, and operation of modern road networks across the East African Community.

The operator currently manages the Nairobi Expressway, a major infrastructure project designed to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity within Nairobi.

The expressway is among China’s flagship projects in Kenya, East Africa, under the Belt and Road Initiative and shortens travel time from JKIA to  Nairobi CBD to 20 minutes, from two hours largely because of traffic.

China Roads and Bridges Construction will operate and maintain it for 30 years to recoup their investment.
