Three-time Nyanza rugby champions Kisii School will rekindle their fierce rivalry with St Mary’s School Yala when the Nyanza Region Secondary Schools Sports Association Term One Games kick off this week.

The regional championships will be staged at Maseno School from Wednesday to Saturday, bringing together top secondary school teams from the region.

Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) rugby champions Kisii School are in Pool A alongside St Mary’s Yala, former champions Maseno School and Nyambaria School in what promises to be a fiercely contested group.

Yala head coach George Kerima described the encounter as one of the standout fixtures.

“We have rectified our mistakes and are ready to face Kisii School and other teams. We shall play Kisii School in the opening game. I can assure fans that it will be an entertaining game,” said Kerima.

Kisii School captain Edwin Morara acknowledged the challenge posed by the group but expressed confidence that his side can defend their title.

“It is a very competitive pool, no doubt about it. It’s the pool of death, but for Kisii School, it’s nothing unfamiliar. We have played Yala in three finals and won. We want to continue with our dominance and stamp our authority as regional champions,” Morara said.

Pool B of the boys’ rugby 15s competition features Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, Friends School Anjego, Gendia High School, and Kisumu County champions Otieno Oyoo High School.

Meanwhile, girls’ rugby 15s returns to the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) calendar this year.

Nyanza Region sevens champions Sigoti Complex Secondary School will begin their title hunt in Pool A against Enkinda Mixed Secondary School and Sidindi Secondary School.

Pool B brings together Kisii County champions Nyagichenche Secondary School, Moi Suba Secondary School, and Mawego National Polytechnic Secondary School from Homa Bay.

In boys’ basketball, St Mary’s Yala will begin their quest for a maiden regional title in Pool A against Kisii School, St Joseph’s Rapogi, and Kisumu Boys High School.

Two-time regional champions Agoro Sare High School headline Pool B alongside former champions Maseno School, Usenge High School, and Nyamira County champions Nyambaria Senior School.

In the girls’ basketball competition, defending champions Asumbi Girls High School headline Pool A with Tuk Jowi Girls Secondary School, Manga Girls High School, and Koru Girls Secondary School.

Pool B will feature a renewed rivalry between former champions Barchando Girls High School and Nyakach Girls High School, with Kereri Girls High School and Nyangajo Girls Secondary School completing the group.
