President William Ruto has announced a new initiative aimed at strengthening Kenya’s motorsport industry and nurturing young talent in rally driving and engineering.

The head of State said the Corporation for Africa Overseas Mobility Kenya has partnered with the Kenya Motorsport Federation to produce the country’s first affordable cross car.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Safari Rally Kenya, Ruto said the initiative is expected to make motorsport more accessible to young Kenyan drivers who often face high entry costs in the sport.

The corporation has also donated two Toyota Starlet rally cars to support the Rally Academy in training upcoming drivers.

In addition, the organisation has developed a specialised training curriculum targeting both drivers and mechanics in the motorsport sector.

The President commended the initiative and urged the organisation to work closely with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions and the Ministry of Education to ensure the programme’s success.

According to Ruto, the government will continue supporting the programme through the Ministry of Sports and the Motorsport Academy to ensure it creates opportunities for the next generation of Kenyan drivers, engineers and technicians.

“As we bring the 2026 Safari Rally to a close, I wish to thank the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile for their continued support, the organising team, the WRC event promoters, our private sector partners, Kenyan fans, visiting fans and all participants whose dedication and resilience have made this event the success it has been,” the President said.

The Safari Rally Kenya remains one of the most iconic and challenging events in the World Rally Championship calendar, attracting global drivers and thousands of fans to Kenya each year.

Ruto said Kenya is proud to host this prestigious event, which has become a shining symbol of the nation’s passion for motorsport and our commitment to global sporting excellence.

"Over the decades, Safari Rally has changed shape and evolved. It may no longer be the thousand-mile marathon that once defined its legend but make no mistake, the spirit of the Safari remains alive and unchanged. It is still the most punishing gravel rally on the planet, a test not only of speed, but of endurance, ingenuity and imagination," he said.

"The terrain still humbles even the most sophisticated of machines. The unpredictable weather, the unforgiving surfaces, and the vast landscapes of the Rift Valley ensure that every crew lining up at the start understands they are entering one of the toughest battles motorsport can offer."

 The President added that to

compete on the terrain is to confront one of the greatest challenges in motorsport.

"Every driver, every co-driver, and every team member who lined up at the start leaves with something more than a result—the knowledge that they faced the Safari and emerged stronger for it."
