The Nairobi City County Government has announced a 30-day waiver on levies and approvals required for property repairs to help residents and businesses recover from the recent floods that have caused widespread destruction across the city.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, the county said the temporary measure is meant to fast-track restoration works on homes, businesses, and public facilities damaged by the heavy rains and flooding.
Acting County Secretary and Head of Public Service Godfrey Akumali said the directive, issued under the authority of the governor’s office, is designed to ease the burden on affected residents while enabling urgent repairs.
“The waiver is intended to expedite the restoration of homes, businesses and public facilities affected by flood damage, safeguard the health and safety of residents, and support community resilience during this challenging period,” the notice stated.
Under the directive, all levies and approvals normally required before undertaking repair and maintenance works will be suspended for one month, allowing property owners to carry out urgent structural repairs without bureaucratic delays.
The county government has urged residents to take advantage of the waiver period to restore damaged structures, while assuring that technical guidance and oversight will still be provided to ensure repairs meet safety standards.
The waiver will remain in effect for 30 days from March 11, 2026, after which normal regulatory requirements will resume.
The move comes as Nairobi continues to grapple with the aftermath of heavy rains that have triggered flooding in several parts of the city, leaving homes destroyed, infrastructure damaged, and families displaced.
Nairobi has in recent weeks experienced heavy rainfall that has triggered flash floods in several neighbourhoods, displacing residents and disrupting daily activities in low-lying areas.
Government officials say relief efforts are ongoing as authorities continue assessing the impact of the flooding and identifying households in need of assistance.
On Monday, hundreds of families affected by recent flash floods in Nairobi received government relief support as authorities stepped up assistance to communities hit by heavy rains.
In Kasarani Sub-County, officials distributed food and non-food relief items to 600 residents during an exercise held at the sub-county headquarters.
The support targeted households that suffered losses following flash floods that swept through parts of the area.
Authorities said the relief package was meant to cushion affected families as they recover from the disruption caused by the flooding.
A similar exercise was conducted in Shauri Moyo within Kamukunji Sub-County, where 700 households received relief supplies. The distribution took place at the Shauri Moyo Chief’s Office.
The assistance included both food and essential non-food items to support families whose homes and belongings were affected by the floods.
