St. Mary’s School, Yala, dominated the Siaya County Secondary Schools Sports Association Term One games, winning multiple titles during the three-day championships held at Ukwala, Lifunga and Ugenya High School.

Backed by their chief principal, V.O. Makanda, Yala retained the rugby 15s and handball titles and also reclaimed the basketball crown. In rugby 15s, the Black Saints, popularly known as the Mighty Colts, produced a dominant display to thrash Ambira High School 46-3 in the final.

Yala also defended their handball title with a convincing 28-19 victory over Dirk Allison Academy. The school capped a successful outing by reclaiming the basketball title for the first time in more than a decade, defeating Usenge Boys High School 65-21 in the final.

Both schools will represent the county at the regional championships scheduled for March 17–21 at Kisumu School in Kisumu County In girls’ basketball, Barchando reclaimed the title after upsetting defending champions Ng’iya 40-37 in a tightly contested final.

Ng’iya, however, retained the girls’ hockey title following a narrow 1-0 victory over former national and East Africa champions Nyamira Girls High School. Quincy Akinyi scored the decisive goal.

In the semi-finals, Nyamira beat Lwak 3-0 before thrashing Kitambo 6-0 to reach the final. Both Ng’iya and Nyamira will proceed to the regional championships. Ng’iya coach Oduor Nyadida praised his team’s tactical discipline.

“It was a tough match, very tough. It was a game of wits and tactics. Coaches from both sides had to strategise and counter scenarios throughout the game,” he said.

“We pressed higher while defending keenly, which finally gave us the results we needed,” he added. In boys’ hockey, Ambira High edged Chianda High School 1-0 to lift the title.

Meanwhile, in Kisumu County, Maseno School clinched the boys’ basketball title after thrashing Kisumu Boys High School 87-41 in the final.

Maseno had earlier hammered Otieno Oyoo High School 100-8 in the semi-final, while Kisumu Boys defeated Nyabondo High School 37-30. In the girls’ category, Nyakach retained the title with a 51-17 victory over Koru. Nyakach had beaten Rae Girls Secondary School 37-16 in the semi-finals, while Koru edged Kisumu Girls High School 41-37.

Kisumu Boys also retained the hockey title after beating Maseno School 3-0, while Huma stunned former national champions Sinyolo School 2-0 to claim the girls’ crown.

Maseno School and Nyakach Girls also retained the handball titles. Maseno defeated Menara 28-18, while Nyakach narrowly edged Guu 22-20. The rugby 15s semi-final between Maseno School and Nyabondo was abandoned.

Milka Matitu, secretary of the Kisumu County Secondary Schools Sports Association, said officials will meet to determine the team that will face Otieno Oyoo in the final.
