Several parts of Nairobi are facing water supply disruptions after heavy overnight rains and flooding damaged key distribution pipelines, the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has said.
In a notice to customers, the water utility said the intense rainfall caused flooding that damaged a number of water distribution lines across the city, interrupting supply to multiple residential estates.
Among the affected infrastructure is the Outering Road pipeline at the Nairobi River crossing, which has disrupted water supply to Buruburu Phases 1 and 2, Kariobangi South and North, Dandora 1 and parts of Mathare.
The Eastleigh to Kiambiu pipeline was also affected, cutting water supply to Eastleigh Section 3, Kiambiu, Jerusalem, Uhuru, Jericho, Ofafa and Harambee estates.
Other damaged lines include the Korogocho to Dandora pipeline, affecting Korogocho, parts of Dandora 1 and Kariobangi North.
In addition, a distribution line along Brookeside Drive between Lower Kabete and Matundu Close Junction was damaged, affecting areas along Lower Kabete Lane and Lower Kabete Road, including the stretch from the Lower Kabete Lane junction down to Karuna and Brookeside Drive.
The water company said technical teams had already been deployed to assess the damage and begin repair works.
“Technical teams have been mobilised and are on-site assessing the damage,” the company said in a statement.
It added that specialised equipment had also been deployed to speed up restoration efforts.
“Flushing units, mobile workshops and cranes have been deployed for the repairs, while technical teams are monitoring river crossings to prevent further damage,” the statement read.
According to the company, repair works on some of the damaged sections are already underway while others will begin immediately after the ongoing assessments are completed.
“Repairs are ongoing and others are set to commence immediately following assessment,” the utility said.
The company further revealed that flooding had caused debris accumulation at the Mwagu Intake, which is currently interfering with water treatment operations at the Ngethu Water Treatment Plant, one of Nairobi’s main water treatment facilities.
“Unclogging of debris at Mwagu Intake is currently ongoing as the blockage is affecting water treatment at Ngethu Treatment Plant,” the company said.
Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain patient as repair works continue, noting that restoring normal supply will depend on the speed of the ongoing technical assessments and repairs.
“Any inconvenience is regretted and we ask for your patience as the team works to restore normal water supply,” the company said.
Customers experiencing water-related issues have also been encouraged to report them through the company’s toll-free customer care line.
“To report any related issues you can call toll free on 0800724366,” the utility added.
