Calls for calm have emerged within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Kisumu County following the postponement of the party’s grassroots elections.

Aspirant for the county chairman position, Jonathan Okoth Opande, urged party members and supporters to remain patient and united as the leadership works to address issues that led to the delay.

He said the consultations that resulted in the postponement were timely and guided by security advice from party leader Oburu Oginga.

“We agreed to the postponement after consultations by the party leadership. We want to urge our members to remain calm and support the party position as we await further directives,” Opande said.

He noted that during his campaigns across the sub-counties, he witnessed strong enthusiasm among members who want the party to remain active and vibrant at the grassroots level.

“I met delegates across the sub-counties and I saw the love they have for ODM. There is a strong desire for the party to remain active and vibrant on the ground,” he added.

Opande also appealed to supporters to back the interim county office as it works to resolve the issues that led to the postponement of the elections.

While admitting that the last-minute cancellation was disappointing for candidates and delegates who had prepared to vote, he said he respects the decision taken by the party leadership.

“As a candidate I must say the last-minute cancellation was disappointing, but we believe the decision was made in the best interest of the party and the people of this region,” he said.

He also expressed support for the ongoing engagements between Oburu Oginga and President William Ruto, saying the discussions could help address the interests of the Lake Region.

Opande is also preparing to contest the Nyakach parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.
