A section of the Moi International Airport in Mombasa./HANDOUTPolice at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa on Sunday carried out a controlled detonation of a suspicious unattended bag found at the terminal.
The discovery had caused brief panic as bomb experts were called to attend to it. Police later established that the bag contained a variety of tools, including spanners, pliers, and a pressure pump used for inflating vehicle tyres.
It is suspected that the bag may have been accidentally dropped by a passenger. Police said they are investigating the incident.
Police have urged passengers to remain vigilant, attend to their luggage at all times, and report any suspicious activities or persons within the airport facility.
Airport Sub-County Police Commander Evans Mose said the situation was under control after an earlier drama. The suspicious bag triggered an immediate evacuation, as well as the deployment of a bomb disposal squad.
The team also employed other security protocols to examine the object that had been lett in the car park near the VIP lounge. Mose said they took all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of passengers and airport staff.
He said the operation was conducted with utmost caution, using specialised equipment to avert any potential disaster, adding that no injuries or fatalities were reported during the detonation.
The bomb squad used their techniques to detonate the bag. The scene had been sealed off for a short while.
