The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has postponed the repeat Phase III grassroots elections in Nakuru County to avoid a clash with the upcoming Safari Rally Kenya scheduled to take place in the region.
In a notice dated March 6, the party’s UDA National Elections Board announced that the elections, which were initially set for Saturday, March 14, 2026, will now be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
The board said the decision was made to allow party members and leaders to participate in and accommodate the global motorsport event, which is part of the World Rally Championship and will run from March 12-15.
Safari Rally Kenya is one of the most famous motorsport events in the world and a major round of the World Rally Championship (WRC).
It attracts top international drivers, teams, and thousands of fans to Kenya every year.
“The UDA National Elections Board hereby notifies all UDA leaders, members and candidates that the repeat Phase III grassroots election in Nakuru County, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, 14th March 2026, has been postponed,” the notice reads in part.
The board explained that the adjustment was necessary due to the hosting and participation of the Safari Rally Kenya, which traditionally attracts thousands of spectators, rally teams, and officials to the county.
“This adjustment is in consideration of the hosting and participation of the Safari Rally Kenya, part of the World Rally Championship, scheduled for 12th March to 15th March 2026,” the board stated.
According to the notice, the repeat grassroots elections will now take place two weeks later to allow smooth organisation and participation by party members across the county.
“Accordingly, the repeat Phase III grassroots election for Nakuru County will now be conducted on Saturday, 28th March 2026,” said the board.
The party has urged all its leaders, members, and candidates in the county to take note of the change and make the necessary arrangements ahead of the new election date.
“All UDA leaders, members and candidates in Nakuru County are kindly requested to take note of this change and make the necessary arrangements,” the notice added.
The communication was signed by the chairman of the UDA National Elections Board, Anthony Mwaura.
“We appreciate your understanding and support regarding this change,” Mwaura said.
The grassroots elections are part of UDA’s ongoing internal exercise aimed at electing party officials at the ward, constituency and county levels across the country.
The process has been rolling out in phases as the party seeks to strengthen its internal structures and leadership ahead of future political activities.
The rally usually runs for four days, with drivers competing across multiple stages covering hundreds of kilometres of rough terrain.
The rally draws thousands of local and international spectators, boosting tourism, hospitality, and business in the host region.
It also puts Kenya on the global sporting map as one of the few African countries hosting a WRC event.
