The floods, triggered by persistent downpours across Migori County, submerged sections of trading centres located near the river, leaving dozens of small-scale traders stranded and struggling to salvage what remained of their businesses.

Witnesses said the river swelled rapidly overnight, spilling into nearby markets and residential areas. Wooden stalls, food kiosks and temporary structures erected close to the riverbank were among the hardest hit, with some being completely washed away by the strong currents.

Several traders said they arrived at their usual trading spots only to find their structures destroyed and merchandise missing. Some attempted to retrieve goods carried by the water, while others could only watch as the floods swept away their livelihoods.

Kenya Meteorology has said the current heavy rainfall of more than 20mm in 24 hours is expected to continue across several parts of the country from March 3-9,2026.

The rainfall is likely to intensify and peak between March 4-7, 2026, before decreasing in most areas by March 8, 2026.

However, heavy rainfall exceeding 20 mm in 24 hours is expected to persist in the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, Parts of Central Highlands, the Southeastern lowlands, and the Coastal region until 9th March 2026.

Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods, flash floods and poor visibility.

Flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily, especially downstream.

People are advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimise exposure to lightning strikes.

Updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes, it said.
