Somalia police assure residents of safety as legislators pass new Constitution

Mogadishu residents have been assured of their safety following the passage of Somalia’s new Constitution, as police authorities deployed heightened security measures across the capital.

Asad Osman Abdullahi, Somalia’s Police Commissioner, said the police service had intensified deployments to ensure peace and stability during the landmark political event.

“We have taken all necessary measures to guarantee security during this important period. Citizens should go about their activities with confidence,” Abdullahi told local media.

Security personnel were visibly stationed at key government buildings, major roads, public spaces, and other strategic points in Mogadishu.

The expanded presence is part of precautionary measures designed to maintain calm as the country begins implementing the newly approved constitutional framework.

Abdullahi emphasized collaboration with other security agencies, highlighting the coordinated effort to protect both residents and visiting officials.

“Our officers are fully deployed and vigilant across the city. We are committed to safeguarding the public and ensuring that this historic moment unfolds peacefully,” he added.

The increased security comes in the wake of a historic vote in the Federal Parliament of Somalia, where lawmakers overwhelmingly approved the revised national Constitution.

The move is seen as a critical milestone in Somalia’s decades-long efforts to rebuild state institutions and strengthen governance.

Security analysts note that in recent months, Somalia has seen a marked improvement in overall safety.

Fewer major security incidents have been recorded, largely due to coordinated operations against militant groups and stronger collaboration between federal authorities and regional administrations.

The new Constitution is expected to reinforce governance and bolster the rule of law by clarifying the separation of powers between the executive, legislature, and judiciary.

It also introduces stricter accountability mechanisms within government institutions, aiming to improve transparency and public trust.

A key feature of the constitutional reforms is the clarified relationship between the federal government and regional administrations, which analysts say will enhance coordination in both governance and security.

The expanded Bill of Rights, another major component, affirms civil liberties and equality before the law, providing a legal foundation for justice, reconciliation, and national stability.

Abdullahi urged residents to remain vigilant but assured them that the police are prepared to maintain order.

“We want the public to enjoy this historic moment safely. Our work is to protect lives and property as Somalia takes this significant step forward,” he said.
