There was high drama at Kabiyet Police Station in Nandi County after a man accused of killing his girlfriend ran into the station to escape an angry mob determined to lynch him.

Police said the suspect sprinted into the report office on the afternoon of March 3, 2026, with dozens of villagers in hot pursuit.

Officers on duty rushed out with cocked guns and managed to hold back the furious crowd that had gathered outside demanding justice.Investigations later linked the man to the killing of his girlfriend, Magdalene Barno, 41, in the Kaiboi area.

Police officers who rushed to the scene found Barno’s body lying in a pool of blood with visible injuries.

Neighbours told police the couple had quarreled overnight, a dispute that allegedly escalated into the fatal attack.

The suspect was detained at Kabiyet Police Station as detectives launched investigations into the incident. The woman’s body was moved to the mortuary for an autopsy.

Tension remained high as locals warned against the suspect’s release, threatening to take matters into their own hands.

Police, however, assured residents that justice would be pursued through the legal process. The crowd later dispersed, easing the standoff at the station.

Authorities say murder cases within homes are increasingly being linked to domestic quarrels as well as disputes over land and money.

In a separate incident, a man drowned while swimming in a dam in the Tala area of Machakos County.

Police identified the victim as Philip Mutisya, who had gone to the dam for a swim when he drowned. Efforts to retrieve his body were still ongoing by Wednesday.

Elsewhere in Juja, Kiambu County, the body of an eight-year-old boy was found on the banks of Thiririka River after a suspected drowning.

Police said the Grade Two pupil at Dekoma Primary School had been swimming with other children when he suddenly drowned. The other children only realised he was missing minutes later.

His body was moved to the mortuary pending further procedures.

Meanwhile, a family in Gachie, Kiambu County, is mourning the death of their nine-month-old baby boy who died after sustaining burns from hot tea.

Police said the child was in his parents’ arms while one of them was taking tea when the hot drink accidentally spilled onto the infant’s head.

The baby suffered severe burns and was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police visited both the hospital and the family’s home as part of investigations into the incident.
