The Suba North Constituency Office has enrolled 245 bright and needy students into a full scholarship programme to help them achieve their education dreams.

Through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo launched the initiative to support top-performing students from vulnerable families.

The initiative, dubbed the I Am a Winner Scholarship Programme, has supported at least 1,000 students since 2014.

Constituency Projects Officer Ochieng Kenya said the programme aims to fight poverty by supporting the education of vulnerable children.

Most of the students enrolled attained strong grades in their national examinations but faced financial challenges joining the secondary schools and colleges where they had been admitted.

Kenya said the constituency hopes to nurture more professionals who will transform the area in future.

“Education is an equaliser and the most effective tool in the fight against poverty. A transformative constituency must support the education of its people,” he said.

Speaking during the disbursement of cheques worth Sh8 million at the NG-CDF offices in Mbita town on Wednesday, Kenya urged the learners to work hard to achieve their academic goals.

He noted that the programme has also boosted the 100 per cent transition rate from primary to secondary school.

The CDF office has further paid Sh1.8 million to 21 students admitted to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Mbita Campus.

Some beneficiaries have since qualified as engineers, medics, architects, and other professionals across various sectors.

“Most students we have supported have proven they can achieve their goals. Some have already graduated in different professional fields,” he said.

Parents of beneficiaries commended the programme, describing it as a major relief amid prevailing economic challenges.

Led by Emily Anyango, they pledged to continue working closely with constituency leaders to ensure the programme meets its objectives.

They said the financial assistance has significantly eased the burden on struggling families.

The programme was introduced following concerns raised by parents over lack of school fees, which has been linked to high poverty levels in the area.

Anyango said constituency officials also guide students in selecting suitable courses.

“The current economic situation is challenging for many families. We support this programme because of the positive impact it has on the constituency,” she said.
