Ahead of the President’s scheduled visit to Siaya County, on Sunday, the Blue Economy Research Hub at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) stands ready, marking a significant milestone in the university’s investment in research and innovation around aquatic resources.
The facility, located in Miyandhe, was commissioned in January 2023 by President William Samoei Ruto, who challenged universities to take the lead in developing home-grown solutions to Africa’s most pressing challenges.
During the commissioning ceremony, the head of state underscored the importance of the blue economy as a frontier with immense potential to contribute to sustainable development, job creation, and economic growth.
He urged institutions of higher learning to align their research and training with the country’s labour market demands and emerging global trends.
The research hub is anchored on Kenya’s broader Blue Economy agenda, which prioritizes the sustainable use of aquatic resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and ecosystem health.
Its vision is to position JOOUST at the forefront of producing highly skilled human resources and cutting-edge research solutions in fisheries, aquatic sciences, and related technologies.
State-of-the-art facility
The highly specialized laboratory is designed to support both postgraduate and undergraduate students in molecular research systems.
Its proximity to freshwater ecosystems, including Lake Victoria, gives the university a strategic advantage in fisheries and aquatic technology research.
Earlier during the launch, the University Council Chairman Prof. Shem Wandiga had lauded the government’s continued investment in research infrastructure, noting that the hub will play a transformative role in improving livelihoods in Siaya County and beyond.
Expanding research footprint
Since its establishment, JOOUST has continued to attract both local and international research funding.
Among its key initiatives is the Africa Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Use of Insects as Food and Feeds (INSEFOODS), funded by the World Bank, which focuses on sustainable food security through insect-based innovations.
The university has also secured grants from the National Research Fund, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and VLIR-OUS, strengthening its research capacity and global partnerships.
Additionally, the institution showcased other projects during the initial launch, including its sericulture initiative in partnership with Silk Organ Limited, highlighting the production of silk and mulberry wine as part of income-generating innovations.
As preparations intensify for the president's upcoming visit, the near-completion of the Blue Economy Research Hub signals JOOUST’s growing role as a centre of excellence in freshwater research and a key player in advancing Kenya’s blue economy ambitions.
