Nairobi residents on Wednesday braved heavy rains as they went about their daily businesses, with sections of Westlands experiencing waterlogged streets following sustained downpours.

Pedestrians were seen navigating flooded pavements with umbrellas in hand, while motorists struggled through slow-moving traffic on roads partially submerged by water.

The wet conditions come a day after the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a heavy rainfall advisory, warning of continued downpours across several parts of the country.

According to the advisory, rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres in 24 hours is expected to persist from March 3 to March 9, 2026.

The department classified the rainfall as moderate to heavy, with the probability of occurrence estimated at between 33 and 66 per cent.

“The rainfall is likely to intensify and peak between March 4 and 7, 2026, before decreasing in most areas by March 8, 2026,” the agency said.

However, even as rainfall is projected to reduce in most regions after March 8, heavy showers exceeding 20mm in 24 hours are expected to continue in the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, parts of the Central Highlands, the Southeastern lowlands and the Coastal region until March 9.

The advisory raises concerns over potential flooding in low-lying areas, poor visibility on roads and possible disruptions to transport and business activities if the rains intensify as forecast.
