
In a significant move to boost youth employment and professionalise its ranks, the National Youth Service (NYS) has officially announced a mass recruitment drive to fill 750 permanent and pensionable positions.
This announcement that specifically targets ex-NYS servicemen and women, signals a major investment in the country’s technical workforce.
The recruitment is strategically divided into two primary cadres, catering to both specialised degree holders and skilled technical staff.
One category has 250 Cadet Officers, Engineers; Civil, Electrical and Mechanical, Architects, Accountants, ICT Officers, and Legal Officers while the second has 500 Privates; Drivers, Plant Operators, Electricians, Masons, Mechanics, and General Duty staff.
The official public notice, released on March 3, 2026, emphasizes the inclusive nature of the technical categories; “The National Youth Service is pleased to announce to the public the recruitment of private and cadet officers, targeting individuals with the discipline and technical expertise cultivated during their initial paramilitary training".
Unlike temporary volunteer placements, these 750 roles offer long-term stability and a comprehensive welfare package. Successful candidates will receive: Permanent & Pensionable Terms that’s long-term job security within the civil service, Competitive Pay: Salaries and allowances aligned with the official NYS and Public Service Commission (PSC) scales, Health Coverage - Integration into the Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme formerly NHIF specifically tailored for civil servants, Career Progression: Opportunities for further training and promotion within the service hierarchy.
To be eligible, applicants must be Kenyan citizens aged between 18 and 28 years. The deadline for all applications is set for March 18, 2026 as this sets pace to cover gaps in unemployment crisis in the country.
