Defending champions Kisii School launched their Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Kisii County title defence in style with a hard-fought 11–5 victory over Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, as the Term One games kicked off on Wednesday.

In a tense rugby 15s encounter, hosts Kisii School struck first through Ezekiel Wanjala’s penalty to take a 3–0 lead into the break. After the restart, Eugene Ochieng sprinted from his own half to cross the whitewash for an unconverted try.
Leistone Onduko extended the advantage with a superb long-range penalty from inside his own half. Cardinal Otunga responded with a try to narrow the gap, but Fidel Ongoro sealed the win in the dying minutes with an unconverted try, handing Kisii an 11–5 triumph.
Kisii School coach Edwin Morara described the contest as evenly balanced.
“I expected a closely contested match, and the boys stayed composed. We want to improve our defensive structure ahead of the next fixture. Our focus is on defending the regional title,” said Morara.

Cardinal Otunga head coach Edwin Metobo admitted his side fell short tactically but remained optimistic ahead of their second match against St Paul’s Rioma.
“The game did not go as planned. We will correct our mistakes, especially in the backline. Our objective is still to win both the county and regional titles,” said Metobo.
Elsewhere in boys’ rugby, Borangi beat Sameta High 14–0, while Kerongorori Mixed overcame Hema Chitago 22–0.
In girls’ hockey, defending champions Amaiko began their campaign with a 2–0 win over Kereri Girls, with Shelly Adhiambo scoring both goals.
Amaiko coach Doreen Auka welcomed the positive start but called for greater competition.
“It was a good start for us. However, we need more teams in hockey. That would give us a stronger challenge and better preparation for the regional games,” she said.
In boys’ basketball, Kisii School signalled their intent to reclaim the title with a commanding 91–16 win over Ayora Mixed. Defending champions Nyanchwa Boys also impressed, thrashing Moi High School Gesusu 84–11.
Nyanchwa coach Kepher Mogire said his largely rebuilt squad is determined to retain the trophy.
“Although this is a rebuilding side made up mainly of Grade 10 students, they have shown the desire to compete and defend their title,” he noted.
