The family of Nick Koskei has paid an emotional tribute to him, describing him as ambitious, hardworking and the “light of the family” whose life was cut short just as it was beginning to flourish.

Koskei was among six people who perished alongside Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ngeno in a chopper crash last Saturday in Nandi.

He was his photographer.

A joint memorial service for the six was held at Karen AGC, drawing relatives, friends, leaders and members of the public.

Speaking during the service, Betty Bett, Koskei’s sister-in-law, remembered him as a young man full of promise.

Nick was just a young, ambitious person who had recently graduated from Maseno University. We are so saddened by his loss,” she said.

According to Bett, Koskei had recently completed his internship with the County Government of Bomet before landing what he considered his breakthrough opportunity, joining the MP’s communication team as a cameraman.

She recalled the excitement that filled their home when Koskei broke the news that the late MP had recognised his work and invited him to be part of his camera crew.

“He was very happy. He said, ‘Wow, my work has been recognised by Mheshimiwa, and I’m going to be part of his camera team,’” she said.

His mother, she noted, was especially proud, believing her son’s career had finally taken off.

“She was very happy because she knew that life had begun for him, not knowing that it was only going to be cut short within a very few years,” Bett said.

Koskei had worked with the MP for barely a year after completing his internship, but in that short period, he distinguished himself as industrious and committed to his craft.

The family described him as the breadwinner whose dedication helped support his loved ones.

“The light of the family has really gone dim because he was the breadwinner. We are really saddened by his loss,” she said.

Bett also thanked mourners for standing with the bereaved families during the difficult moment.

“Let me thank each and every one of you for coming here today so that we can mourn all the members who lost their lives,” she added.

“Nick, we loved you so much, but God loved you more. We will dearly miss you.”
