Senate clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye, Speaker Amason Kingi and Minority leader Stewart Madzayo during the Senate retreat in Naivasha/HANDOUTThe Senate has approved its calendar for the fifth session, outlining sitting days and recess periods from February to December 2026.
In a notice issued pursuant to Standing Order 32, the House resolved on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to adopt the regular sessions calendar for the year.
The schedule, dated February 18, 2026 and published in a Gazette notice dated February 27, was signed by Clerk of the Senate Jeremiah Nyegenye.
According to the approved programme, the fifth session is divided into six parts.
Part I runs from February 10 to April 2, 2026, with sittings scheduled on Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday mornings and afternoons, and Thursday afternoons.
This will be followed by a short recess from April 3 to April 20.
Part II resumes from April 21 to May 14, with Tuesday afternoon sittings.
From May 15 to June 1, the House will sit on Wednesday mornings and afternoons, and Thursday afternoons.
Part III spans June 2 to July 2, maintaining the Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday morning and afternoon, and Thursday afternoon pattern.
Senators will then proceed on recess from July 3 to July 13.
Under Part IV, sittings will take place from July 14 to August 6 on the usual three-day schedule, before a longer recess from August 7 to September 7.
Part V is set for September 8 to October 8, with sessions on Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday mornings and afternoons, and Thursday afternoons.
Another break will follow from October 9 to November 2.
The final segment, Part VI, begins on November 3 and runs into early December, with sittings continuing under the established timetable before the long end-of-year recess.
The notice further clarifies that the Senate shall sit from 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from 9.30 am to 1 pm on Wednesdays, in line with Standing Order 34.
Special sittings, if any, will be communicated through Kenya Gazette notices pursuant to Standing Order 33, Nyegenye said.
Additionally, committee meetings will be suspended from Friday, December 11, 2026, to Friday, January 29, 2027, marking the close of the legislative year.
The approved calendar provides a structured roadmap for legislative business, including consideration of Bills, oversight of county governments and national revenue allocation matters, as the Senate enters the final full year before the 2027 General Election cycle gains momentum.
The National Assembly has also approved its calendar, which runs until December 3, 2026.
The first part of the session runs from February 10 to March 12, after which lawmakers will proceed for a short recess from March 13 to March 30.
