The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has issued a public advisory warning visitors about ongoing heavy rains that have affected roads within national parks and protected areas across the country.
According to the notice, “Several roads within national parks and protected areas are currently flooded, impassable, slippery, or temporarily cut off.”
KWS has urged the public to avoid travelling to affected sections until conditions improve.
The Service emphasised that all visitors should strictly follow ranger guidance and posted signage while in the parks.
The notice further cautioned, “Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or swollen rivers,” highlighting the risks posed by the current weather conditions.
KWS also pointed out that wildlife movement may increase during periods of heavy rain, further increasing risks for visitors.
“Exercise caution as wildlife movement may increase during heavy rains,” the advisory stated, underlining the importance of vigilance when visiting protected areas.
The advisory frames these measures within the broader context of national safety and environmental protection.
“These precautionary measures support national safety priorities and sustainable environmental management,” KWS noted, stressing that visitor safety and habitat conservation are central to its mandate.
Members of the public are urged to plan travel responsibly and remain vigilant at all times.
KWS has provided emergency support for those who may encounter difficulties in the parks, offering 24-hour assistance through a toll-free number: 0800 597 000.
Visitors are reminded that adherence to the advisory is not optional but essential for their safety.
The Service said, “For your safety and in line with our mandate to safeguard visitors, wildlife, and habitats,” these instructions must be followed.
The advisory comes as part of KWS’s ongoing commitment to ensure safe, sustainable tourism within Kenya’s protected areas.
It reinforces the need for caution during extreme weather events, particularly in areas where roads can become treacherous and wildlife more active.
KWS’s notice is intended to keep both visitors and wildlife safe while protecting Kenya’s natural habitats.
The public has been encouraged to postpone visits to affected areas until conditions improve and to strictly comply with all guidance provided by rangers and posted signage.
The Service also urged the public to remain vigilant, plan travel responsibly, and prioritise safety at all times.
The advisory is a reminder that responsible behaviour is key to safeguarding both human life and Kenya’s wildlife during the heavy rains.
