Four suspects have been arrested after officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) seized an estimated two tonnes of suspected zebra meat during an intelligence-led operation in Gikambura, Kiambu County.
The raid, conducted on Wednesday, targeted what authorities described as a suspected bushmeat supply chain, with follow-up enforcement at Dagoretti Market in Nairobi County.
According to KWS, officers recovered six sacks of suspected de-boned zebra meat, one fully skinned zebra carcass and 15 frozen meat packages weighing approximately 250 grams each.
The total haul is estimated at about 2,000 kilograms, in addition to 7.5 kilograms of packaged frozen meat.
The four suspects were taken into custody and investigations are ongoing, with authorities seeking to establish the source of the meat and the wider network behind the illegal trade.
“KWS will not relent in its efforts to dismantle illegal wildlife trade networks. The killing and commercialisation of protected wildlife is a serious offence under Kenyan law,” the agency said in a statement.
Under the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act (Cap 376), it is illegal to kill, possess, transport or trade in wildlife without lawful authority.
KWS said the seizure underscores the scale of the illegal bushmeat trade and vowed to intensify surveillance and enforcement operations to curb poaching and illegal meat distribution.
The agency urged members of the public to report any suspected wildlife crime through its official reporting channels.
