The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) won all the four seats in a by-election marked by low voter turnout.
Isiolo South constituency candidate Mohammed Tubi won the seat with 7,352 votes, trouncing his closest rival, Bina Tubi of the Jubilee party, who garnered 634 votes.
Independent candidate Isaac Abduba trailed with 44 votes.
The results, announced after tallying ballots from all 60 polling stations, handed UDA a resounding victory and reaffirmed the party’s dominance in the region.
Isiolo South constituency has a total of 22,181 registered voters, and the outcome of the mini-poll is keenly being watched both locally and nationally due to the unique political dynamics surrounding the race.
Duncan Muratia won the Evurore seat in Embu county with 7,853 votes, Peterson Njeru won the Muminji ward seat with 3,207 votes and Elphas Shalakha won the West Kabras seat in Kakamega county with 3,317 votes.
The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mohamed Tubi Bidu.
The IEBC formally declared the seat vacant after he died while receiving medical treatment in Nairobi on November 12 last year.
Bidu, who had been elected in the August 2022 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket, was widely regarded as a prominent local leader and influential figure in Isiolo South politics.
In a rare case of sibling rivalry playing out in the political arena, the by-election saw a brother and sister square off for the same seat.
Tubi Mohammed and Bina Mohammed, both children of the late former MP Mohamed Tubi, went head-to-head in a high-stakes contest that captivated residents of the constituency.
Despite sharing the same political lineage and family background, neither candidate was willing to step aside, setting the stage for an intense battle that dominated local political discourse in the weeks leading up to the vote.
Throughout the campaign period, Tubi Mohammed exuded confidence in clinching the seat. He expressed satisfaction with the preparations made by IEBC and urged residents to turn out in large numbers to cast their ballots, emphasising the importance of civic participation in shaping the constituency’s future.
The February 26 exercise was not limited to Isiolo South alone. Other mini-polls were conducted across the country to fill vacant county assembly seats.
In Kakamega county, voters in West Kabras Ward in Malava constituency elected a new Member of the County Assembly (MCA) following a vacancy in the ward.
