More than 300,000 small-scale farmers in Trans Nzoia are benefiting from a free maize seed distribution programme.
The initiative, spearheaded by Governor George Natembeya, aims to boost food production in the county.
Now in its third year, the programme has cost the county Sh139 million. It forms part of Natembeya’s broader strategy to shield farmers from the rising cost of farm inputs.
Natembeya spoke in Nabiswa, Kiminini subcounty on Tuesday during the second day of the distribution exercise.
He called on the national government to provide maize seeds and fertiliser for free saying many farmers can no longer afford even subsidised products.
“Food production in the country has declined because of the high cost of farm inputs and the tough economic times,” the governor said.
“We want the national government to supply farm inputs, as farmers can no longer purchase even subsidised products.”
He said the high cost of living has significantly affected farming, adding that strategic support is essential to achieve higher crop production.
Natembeya expressed confidence that the county will produce seven million bags of maize in the coming harvest season, reinforcing Trans Nzoia’s status as the nation’s breadbasket.
Beyond maize, the governor highlighted the county’s crop diversification programmes and encouraged farmers to venture into coffee, tea and other crops to reduce over-reliance on a single harvest.
Natembeya also criticised aspects of the Kenya Kwanza government, particularly the implementation of the Social Health Authority and the Competency-Based Education.
He said poor implementation of SHA has affected maternal health services, with more women delivering at home, reversing gains made under the previous Linda Mama programme.
On the political front, the governor signalled that the opposition will continue advocating reforms as it prepares for the 2027 General Election. He urged Kenyans to register as voters and elect leaders based on merit rather than tribe or community.
While expressing readiness to work with the national government for the benefit of Trans Nzoia residents, Natembeya warned that he would not accept conditional cooperation tied to political loyalty.
He alleged that some individuals who joined the government did so to protect personal interests rather than serve the public.
The governor also cautioned security officers and public servants against being used for political purposes.
He said many government employees are struggling with heavy deductions from their payslips, making it difficult for them to support their families.
Natembeya reiterated that the county administration would continue supporting farmers to ensure they earn from their work while helping the country achieve food security.
