Turkana county has enrolled more than 139,000 ECDE learners, with expanded facilities and improved care, while linking children’s nutrition programmes to local farmers’ produce.

Under Governor Jeremiah Lomurukai, the number of ECDE centres has grown to more than 1,000, accompanied by capacity-building programmes for teachers.

The governor has also pledged to improve nutrition for learners as the county continues to strengthen education and care.

During a visit to Turkana East, Lomurukai met farmers from the Morulem Irrigation Scheme Cooperative Society, who proposed supplying locally grown Ikosi sorghum porridge to ECDE centres.

The cooperative argued that the county could provide a stable, ready market for their produce while economically empowering more than 3,500 members.

“One of our biggest challenges has been finding reliable markets. With the county as our buyer, we can support our families and meet the needs of the growing number of ECDE learners,” cooperative member Joyce Ekadelisaid.

She said the society has the capacity to supply the required quantities.

Founded in 2019, the cooperative has grown from 500 to 3,500 members, driven by access to credit and initiatives aimed at transforming livelihoods.

Ekadeli praised the Kuza Jamii project, which partnered with the county to organise the Farmers Field Day, providing an opportunity for farmers to showcase their products.

Eruko Cooperative members also celebrated selling all 1,000 goats through a public auction during the event and suggested extending the duration of future field days to maximise benefits.

Governor Lomurukai assured farmers of continued support, emphasising that the county will allocate resources to expand ECDE facilities, improve staffing and enhance feeding programs.

“This is a win-win for our children and our farmers,” he said. “By linking local produce to nutrition programmes, we are investing in education, health and the economic empowerment of our communities.”

The initiative highlights how county-led social programmes can directly impact local livelihoods, creating a stronger connection between education, nutrition and community development in Turkana.
