The Makueni county government has rolled out a mass registration exercise for universal health coverage across all 390 clusters in the area.
Addressing the media Tuesday at the Makueni County Referral Hospital, county health executive Joyce Mutua said the target is to register 200,000 vulnerable people.
Consequently, the county government has set aside Sh90 million to fund the programme this financial year, with each of the 30 wards receiving Sh3 million.
“We have a programme initiated by the county, which we call Makueni Universal Health Coverage. It is a programme where we are going to identify vulnerable households to be covered under the social insurance fund,” Mutua said.
“This is an ongoing activity in the 30 wards, and we have even gone further to the 390 grassroots clusters, where registration will run from Tuesday 24 to Friday 27 February 2026,” she added.
The county executive further disclosed that the programme, being implemented in phases to accommodate as many eligible beneficiaries as possible, will ultimately be carried out in close collaboration with the national Social Health Authority.
“Therefore I urge all Makueni residents to register with SHA through the Afya Yangu platform and update their dependants’ records. To do this, you will be expected to carry your national identification card, birth certificates for your children, and a personal mobile phone,” Mutua said.
She added that proxy testing will be used to identify the most vulnerable households, ensuring only those in genuine need benefit from the programme.
Chief Officer for Health Human Resource Management Harvey Mulei said healthcare financing remains a costly undertaking, adding that the county government is committed to enhancing access to quality healthcare services.
“This programme will protect families from financial strains, effectively cushioning them from selling portions of their land to meet unforeseen medical expenses,” Mulei noted.
